Aunt has Powerful Words for Black Lives Matter After Losing Nephew

TROY, NY – In one of the most impactful videos in recent memory, Starlem Sameik, took to Facebook in the early hours of Friday morning to express raw emotion in finding out that just hours prior her Nephew, Tamari Rodriguez, 17, had been shot.

While details regarding the shooting are still being investigated, the Troy Police Department said in a statement that the shooting took place at the corner of 7th and Glen Avenues just after 11 p.m. on Thursday. Tamari suffered a gunshot to the head and was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he passed away Friday night.

In the following video, posted to Sameik’s Facebook account just after Midnight on Friday morning, she calls on Black Lives Matter supporters to answer a series of questions regarding their message and actions and what they mean in the context of her nephew, Tamari. The video was posted with the caption “Fuck Your “Black Lives Matter”! And Fuck Whoever gets offended by what I said!”

The video is raw, emotional and contains coarse language.

Her passion and her questions have resonated with Facebook users with the video currently having over 44,000 shares.

Protest by Black Lives Matter in Troy have been a frequent occurrence since the death of George Floyd in May. A BLM protest that took place at Riverfront park in June drew a reported crowd of over 10,000 protesters. More recently protest have been occurring nearly daily since the acquittal of former Rensseiaer County DA Joel Abelove who had been charged in his actions and testimony during the investigation of the Officer Involved Shooting death of Edson Thevenin

While we await any statements from local or national Black Livers Matter leaders, the family has created a GoFundMe to help with funeral cost, which can be visited here.
