CLEVELAND – We’re getting to the truth when it comes to claims made by both sides during the first Presidential Debate of the 2020 Elections.
The following statement, made by Joe Biden, comes during his rebuttal to President Trump and the good he has done the African American Community during his first term.
The Statement: Corona Virus has killed 1 in 1000 African Americans and by the end of the year, without changes, that number will be 1 in 500.
The Truth: The most recent numbers show that the figure is close to 1 in 1,737 African Americans who have died due to Corona Virus. Biden it seems, has inflated the true impact by nearly double.
The latest population information available from the US Census Bureau comes from April 2019. In that report, available here, African Americans represented 43,984,096 (13.4%) of the total of 328,239,593.
According to the latest numbers from the CDC, African Americans represented 25,364 (20.9%) of the nearly 121,334 total cases for which race was known.
For Biden to have been correct in his claim that COVID-19 has killed 1 in 1000 African Americans, the COVID-19 deaths for this population segment would need to be nearly 44,000 deaths. Instead, with only 25,364 deaths, the true impact is closer to 1 in 1,737 African Americans.
His further claim that by the end of the year, without intervention, the death rate for African Americans from COVID-19 will be 1 in 500, would require a nearly 4 fold increase in monthly deaths to reach a death toll 87,968 African Americans by the end of the year.
