24-year-old Jhamal Gonsalves, remains in the hospital in a coma as a result of an injury sustained at the end of a police chase with the Providence RI Police Department. The chase which was captured by witnesses on video has led to protesting overnight.
Investigators say the incident occurred while they were trying to escort hundreds of ATV dirt bikes in scooters out of the city many of which are illegal to be on the roadways. Unfortunately, the ending moments of the police chase are not visible on the witness video. Jhamal’s family and friends are stating they believe Jhamal was hit by the pursuing officer while the officers are saying they did not come in contact with Jamal or his scooter.
His family and protesters are demanding that the Providence Police officer be held responsible for the resulting injuries.
The issue of illegal use of dirt bikes and ATV’s on Providence streets has come to a head recently with the City Council holding an event on October 9th announcing a hotline for anonymous tips by citizens the event also showcased the destruction of confiscated ATV’s and dirt bikes.
